British lightweight Lewis Ritson admits he will go back to the drawing board after losing to Francesco Patera on Saturday night. The Newcastle fighter suffered the first defeat of his career as he tried to win his first bout at European level.
Patera came into the clash as a former European champion and he retained his crown after picking up a points win.
Ritson had been expected to dominate at Newcastle’s Metro Arena but he was giving a boxing lesson at times and the 25-year-old admits he will need to learn his lessons.
“It wasn’t the performance I wanted,” Ritson told Sky Sports.
“The better man won. After the first four rounds I was heading back to the corner almost laughing. I maybe got too complacent.
“I got caught with a body shot in the fifth and I couldn’t recover. I’m gutted. I got hurt and then I couldn’t get it back.”
