Southampton are among the clubs keeping tabs on Danny Drinkwater’s situation at Chelsea with a view to a January swoop. The midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge after signing for them in a £35million deal from Leicester and is currently well down the pecking order.
It came as something of a surprise that the 28-year-old failed to get himself fixed up with a new club in the summer as it was clear he was not in the plans of Maurizio Sarri.
Chelsea snapped up Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned from a loan spell at Crystal Palace. Add to that Ross Barkley being fit and available, and Cesc Fabregas on the way back, Drinkwater’s route to the first team is completely blocked.
Reports now claim that Saints will attempt to snap him up on loan with a view to a permanent deal when the window opens, but they will face strong competition.
Drinkwater’s former club Leicester City along with West Ham United are also said to be interested in such a deal so the midfielder will have options when the window opens.
