Southampton Under-21 striker Marcus Barnes has revealed his delight after scoring in Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy triumph.
Barnes, who boasts four goals from his last five outings, opened the scoring to send Southampton on their way against Colchester at the JobServe Community Stadium.
Striker Martin Obafemi ensured the points were in the bag with a stoppage-time goal to wrap up a 2-0 triumph.
Victory means the Under-21s are still unbeaten across all competitions this term and Barnes was delighted to see the squad claim victory against a senior side.
Barnes told the club’s official website: “We’re all over the moon with the start. The coaches are giving us praise but they’re making sure we stay on top of where we are.
“We’re always trying to improve each game so this was a real test for us against first-team opposition and we wanted to continue our unbeaten run.
“Our coaches talk to us about the non-negotiables. The running, the tackling and the hard work. Everything else will fall into place.
“We all know we’re good technical players so as long as we work harder than our opposition we’ll continue to win games.”
