Bosses at the Etihad want to tie down winger Leroy Sane to a lucrative new deal despite the current question marks surrounding him. The Germany international did not even make the match-day squad for Manchester City’s 2-1 weekend home win over Newcastle United.
Boss Pep Guardiola insisted the decision was purely tactical but Sane is yet to start a game this season for the Premier League champions even though fit.
It is even more surprising after last season’s PFA Young Player of the Year had the summer off after he was surprisingly left out of Germany’s World Cup squad.
City continue to insist there is not a problem behind the scenes with the brilliant 22-year-old and his opportunity will comes once the calendar ramps up after the international break.
And club insiders also state plans remain afoot for City to sit down with Sane and discuss a new long-term deal, boosting his present £65,000-per-week pay packet.
The former Schalke graduate was signed for £38m in 2016 and he still has three years on his deal, with City executives adamant they want to secure him for an even longer period.
