Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says Ruben Loftus-Cheek has an important role to play with the club this season. The 22-year-old was so impressive during a season-long loan spell with Crystal Palace last season that he was included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
Loftus-Cheek made four appearances for his country at the finals and was tipped to force his way into the Chelsea team on a regular basis as a result.
However, the midfielder has only played 22 minutes of Premier League football so far this term and his first-team opportunities appear to have been limited further by the arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.
Loftus-Cheek had been linked with another loan move away from the club but Sarri has now confirmed he not only wants to keep the youngster, but he plans to play him.
“I’m very, very happy with him because in the last 10 days he has improved a lot,” Sarri said. “So I am really very happy with him.
“I think that he will be important for sure. Starting from September we will play every three days and so I think that Loftus will be very important and very useful for us.”
Sarri may choose to start Loftus-Cheek when Chelsea put their perfect league record on the line against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Cesc Fabregas remains sidelined with a knee injury but the Blues have no fresh injury concerns.
