Schuttler The Right Appointment – Kerber

Angelique Kerber believes Rainer Schuttler ticks all the boxes as her new coach and is confident the duo will work well together. Despite winning the 2018 Wimbledon Championship under the guidance of coach Wim Fissette, Kerber parted ways with the Belgian just before the WTA Finals in October and she underwent a thorough search for a replacement.

After deliberating several options, the three-time Grand Slam champion decided to announce the appointment of 2003 Australian Open finalist Schuttler on November 13.

Questions have been asked about the 42-year-old German’s credentials as he is yet to coach a WTA player after stints with Sergiy Stakhovsky and Vasek Pospisil, but Kerber has defended her choice and believes her compatriot fits the mould well.

In a recent interview with Spox.com, she said: “I had already thought about a few names, but Rainer meets all the criteria. He has already gained experience as a player and coach. “He does not have anyone on the WTA tour trained, but that will not be a big change for him. With Rainer you can have fun – and trust him.”
