Scotland Select Uncapped Trio For Autumn Tests

Uncapped trio Blade Thomson, Sam Skinner and Sam Johnson have been named in the Scotland squad for November’s autumn internationals.

Scarlets forward Thomson was born in New Zealand and represented the All Blacks at youth level but failed to make the grade for the seniors, opting instead to pursue an international career with the Scots.

The 27-year-old qualifies for Scotland via his grandparents and joins fellow southern hemisphere native Johnson in Gregor Townsend’s 40-man squad.

Australia-born Johnson is eligible for selection on residency grounds and will hope to transfer his good domestic form to the international stage, the centre having been named Glasgow’s Player’s Player of the Year last season.

Exeter lock Skinner has previously played for England at Under-20 level but qualifies for Scotland via his father.

Scotland go into the games against Wales, Fiji, Australia and Argentina missing key personnel with full-back Stuart Hogg and forwards Zander Fagerson, John Barclay and Richie Gray all unavailable.

Alex Dunbar, Jonny Gray, Huw Jones, Greig Laidlaw, Sean Maitland, Willem Nel, Gordon Reid, Finn Russell, Tommy Seymour, Ryan Wilson and Hamish Watson all return to the squad having missed out in the summer due to either injury or being rested.

“We had a productive summer tour in which a number of players made their first outing for their country,” said Townsend.
“A lot of those players have continued to perform well for their clubs and have merited re-selection in a strong group.

“We also welcome Blade and both Sams into the squad. We are looking forward to working with them and getting our squad back together for the first time since the summer.”
