Scots Hoping To ‘See The Best’ Of Cairney

Scotland assistant coach Peter Grant is hoping the national side get to “see the best” of Fulham’s Tom Cairney next month. The 27-year-old played a crucial role in helping Fulham to win promotion from the Championship last term, scoring five times and laying on five assists.

Fulham will need the midfielder to be at his very best again this term if they are to avoid an immediate return to the second-tier.

Cairney missed Scotland’s summer friendlies against Peru and Mexico but he has been called back into the mix for the upcoming engagements.

Scotland host Belgium in a friendly on September 7 before welcoming Albania for their UEFA Nations League clash three days later.

Grant feels Cairney can prove to be a huge asset for the national side over the next few years as they bid for a spot at Euro 2020.

“The biggest skill he’s got is the fact that he’s comfortable in possession of the ball,” Grant said.

“You need people running by Tom so he can step in and get on possession of the ball, so we’ve got to build a team round about the fact it helps these guys perform at their best.

“He’s very much a creator of opportunities, but he’s also a goalscorer. Hopefully, we can see the best of him.”
