Luke Shaw is ready to keep Manchester United waiting before deciding whether to commit himself to a new deal at Old Trafford. The Red Devils’ left-back can walk away for free next summer – something his club are determined not to let happen – despite ongoing struggles since his £30m arrival from Southampton in 2014.
Shaw is currently back in favour with Jose Mourinho and his early-season displays earned him an England call-up for the UEFA Nations league clash this weekend against Spain and next week’s friendly clash with Switzerland.
The 23-year-old was in the international wilderness for 17 months but stated this week that his manager’s ‘tough-love’ stance had made him mentally stronger.
United insiders, though, have shared concerns Shaw is biding his time and wants to see if he will nail down the regular left-back slot this term before sitting down to discuss a new contract.
Shaw already earns a hefty £130,000-per-week and United officials are prepared to boost that figure to protect their original investment in the player.
The former Saints academy graduate is holding all the cards and knows his former boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur would be keen to link up with him again.
Mourinho has already told Shaw that he wants him to stay but United aren’t confident of bringing him to the negotiating table anytime soon.
