Luke Shaw jumped to the defence of Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham. United produced a lacklustre display at the London Stadium and the defeat leaves them 10th in the Premier League standings, a full nine points behind early-season pacesetters Manchester City and Liverpool.
Mourinho has come in for a lot of criticism over recent weeks, not least because of his reported strained relationship with Paul Pogba, but Shaw has absorbed the Portuguese of any blame for their most recent loss and has instead insisted it is the players that must take responsibility.
“If you want the truth I think it [Saturday’s performance] was honestly horrendous,” Shaw said. “We didn’t look like a team that was going to beat West Ham. I think individually and as a team we were awful.
“We have to look at ourselves as players. We’re the ones who go on the pitch. The manager isn’t on the pitch is he?”
The Red Devils are now without a win in their last three matches in all competitions, but they will have an immediate opportunity to bounce back from their latest defeat when Valencia visit Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.
