Shelvey Urges Magpies To Wake Up

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has admitted his team need to realise the situation they are in before it is too late. The Magpies are second bottom of the Premier League after just eight games, with Rafa Benitez’s men yet to taste victory.

Draws against Crystal Palace and Cardiff mean they are not rock bottom but fans are already worried about their status in the top flight.

They nearly ended their winless run against Manchester United before surrendering a 2-0 lead and Shelvey insists his team need to sort themselves out quickly.

He told the Shields Gazette: “We can’t keep putting it off saying ‘next week, next week’, we’ve got to realise the situation we’re in.

“These next 10 games are massive. We need to realise the situation we’re in and really put our feet to the metal and work hard on the training pitch.

“That’s the only way we’re going to get out of this – by sticking together and keeping this unity going. We’ve got a great squad, we just need to start turning these performances into results.”
