Smith Eyes Huge Anfield Bout – Gallagher

Trainer Joe Gallagher has confirmed Callum Smith wants to fight the likes of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Andre Ward at Anfield in 2019. The 28-year-old Merseysider has enjoyed a good year which culminated in him defeating George Groves in the final of the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight tournament in September to claim the WBA and Ring magazine titles.

It took Smith’s unbeaten record to 25, 18 of which have come via a stoppage, and his promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin is the favourite to be his opponent at the home of Liverpool FC in May next year.

However, Gallagher feels a showdown against multiple-time world champion, Canelo, who is stepping up a division to fight Britain’s Rocky Fielding for his WBA (Regular) super-middleweight strap in New York on December 15, would help push Smith to “another level”.

Alternatively, Gallagher challenged Ward to come out of retirement and face Callum or current defending WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson to drop down a division.

Gallagher told Sky Sports. “He wants to fight at Liverpool in the stadium, the end of May next year. “If you mention Canelo, well that’s the man that beat the man. He’s moved up to fight Rocky at the end of the year. “If he wants to then come to Anfield next year and fight the No 1 super-middleweight in the world, Callum Smith, then now we’re talking. That’s a fight that motivates Callum Smith.”

Gallagher added: “Listen Callum Smith is ready to go and wants to challenge himself again, against the best in the world. “The likes of ‘Canelo’, Andre Ward and Adonis Stevenson, they are the names that will get the juices flowing, that puts the fear factor into Callum Smith. “If Callum beats a Canelo, an Andre Ward or Stevenson it will absolutely lift him to another level again.”
