Caglar Soyuncu failed his audition to replace Wes Morgan with a mistake-ridden display in a 1-1 Premier League 2 draw with Chelsea. Soyuncu has been tipped to step in for his first-team debut against Huddersfield Town next weekend with captain Morgan suspended after his red card at Bournemouth.
But the £19million signing from Freiburg struggled as the Foxes’ under-23s returned to the top of the Premier League 2 table courtesy of a 1-1 draw sealed by Shinji Okazaki’s header.
He was often bailed out by teammates and wasteful Chelsea finishing after giving the ball away with centre-back partner Josh Knight looking the far more composed of the duo.
Chelsea took a deserved second-half lead when left-back Callum Elder fouled Tariq Lamptey in the corner of the box and Callum Hudson-Odoi put away the spot-kick.
Soyuncu made a crucial tackle to help out Knight, who had dived in, minutes later before Fousseni Diabate’s effort from a cleared corner was blocked on the Chelsea goal-line.
Diabate then fired wide after good link-up with Okazaki, who then ballooned a diving header over from six yards.
But the Japan international did make amends 60 seconds later, burying Hamza Choudhury’s pinpoint cross with a powerful header from six yards out.
Soyuncu almost gift-wrapped a winner for Chelsea with another loose but goalkeeper Viktor Johansson reacted quickly to save Billy Gilmour’s shot.
