Tottenham are bracing themselves for more interest in Toby Alderweireld with Manchester United said to be lining up another bid. United’s failed pursuit of the Belgium international was well documented in the summer but Reds boss Jose Mourinho has not given up hope and the player remains his top target.
United were unwilling to match Tottenham’s £60million valuation in the summer window but are now hopeful they will be able to land him for much less.
Alderweireld has a clause in his current contract that will allow him to leave for £24.4million at the end of the season and unless Spurs can get him tied down to a new one, with no such clause, they risk losing him on the cheap.
The only other option for Spurs would be to cash in when the January transfer window opens, and they could look for a figure in the region of £40million for the central defender.
Boss Mauricio Pochettino has replacements lined up, but with money being tight at the club, he will need to get as much as possible for Alderweireld to fund his own moves.
