Paulo Gazzaniga admits he was surprised to earn his first-ever Argentina call-up this month and initially thought that it was a joke. The 26-year-old Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper left Argentina as a teenager in search of a career in the game and has never previously represented his country at any level.
But he could make his debut for the Albiceleste in one of two friendly matches against Mexico over the next seven days.
His reaction to the call-up was: “Very excited, very happy, it really took me by surprise, at the first moment a thousand things go through your head. Now I am coming down.”
And the ex-Gillingham and Southampton stopper, who has performed well for Spurs when called in to replace Hugo Lloris this season, admits he initially thought he was the subject of a practical joke from Mauricio Pochettino and his staff.
“Yes, I was surprised because it was from one day to the next, everything was very fast, Mauricio and the staff told me and I thought they were joking, it was a joke”, he added.
