Thiem Wins St Petersburg Open

Dominic Thiem secured a straightforward victory in the St Petersburg Open on Sunday as he beat Martin Klizan 6-3 6-1. Thiem held his serve throughout the entire game and wrapped up victory in just over an hour against the Slovak who is currently ranked at number 66 in the world.

It was the Austrian’s first final since losing in the French Open this year to clay master Rafael Nadal but there were clearly no bad memories on display for him as he made light work of his opponent.

Thiem had not won a hard court event since his victory in the Mexican Open in 2016 against Bernard Tomic – all his other seven ATP ranking titles were on clay.

Despite losing all his previous meetings against Klizan, Thiem only faced two break points which he dealt with, and broke Klizan’s serve on three occasions.

The world number eight now leads the ATP World Tour with 48 wins in 2018.
