Todt Downplays F1 Predictability

FIA boss Jean Todt has downplayed the predictability in Formula One, claiming all sports contend with periods of dominance. With Mercedes claiming their fifth consecutive Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championship titles, there have been calls for the FIA to introduce ways to level up the playing field.

However, Todt is adamant the Silver Arrows’ impressive run is not unique to motorsport. “Bayern Munchen is not the leading team in the Bundesliga for the first time in six years but Paris Saint-Germain has dominated Ligue 1 for the past six years and has returned to 13 matches and are 13 points ahead in the table and Usain Bolt dominated the 100 and 200 metre sprints for 10 years worldwide,” Todt said.

“The Mercedes domination in Formula One is not an isolated case. “Every sport is very closely linked to excellence. Of course we all want things to be a bit more varied, more entertaining and if I had a magic wand, I’d like to think that (Formula One) is a little less predictable, that we experience races with a narrower power density.”
