Tomkins to put romance to one side

Wigan’s Sam Tomkins insists he will not allow himself to get emotional as he prepares to play in the Grand Final on Saturday. The 29-year-old will make his third Grand Final appearance this weekend when he plays for the Warriors at Old Trafford against Warrington Wolves.

Tomkins ended his first spell at Wigan with a 30-16 win over the Wire in 2013 before he departed for the NRL.
He will leave this winter for Catalans Dragons, while John Bateman, Ryan Sutton and coach Shaun Wane will also move on.

Despite the importance of the game, Tomkins insists the team’s fortunes must come before his own personal milestone.

“I’ll save all the emotion for after the game,” he said. “It is a little bit different this time. In 2013 when I left with a Grand Final ring, I wasn’t sure if I’d play for Wigan again. It turns out I have but I know this will be my last game in a Wigan jersey.

“There’s a very slim chance I’d ever wear a Wigan jersey again so it’s important for me to hopefully bow out as a winner.”
