Manchester United have failed in their attempts to sign Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin ahead of the transfer deadline.
United have made no secret of the fact they want to sign a new centre-back before the close of the transfer window, but they have so far failed in their attempts to lure the likes of Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld to Old Trafford.
Indeed, the Red Devils reportedly had a £60million bid rejected by Leicester for Maguire earlier this week, which led to them turning their attention to the vastly experienced Godin.
The Uruguay international is believed to have an £18million release clause built into his contract that United boss Jose Mourinho was keen to activate, while the Red Devils were also willing to offer the 32-year-old a deal worth £8million a year.
However, it appears Godin has now opted against joining United and he is instead set to sign a new contract with last season’s Europa League winners.
The defender has spent the last eight years with Atleti and now looks set to see out the remainder of his career with the Madrid giants.
