United keen For De Gea Extension

Manchester United plan to take up their 12-month option on David de Gea before the busy Christmas period, according to senior insiders. Bosses at Old Trafford have made repeated attempts to get the brilliant Spain goalkeeper to pen a new five-year agreement worth an estimated £370,000-per-week, including bonuses.

However, the 28-year-old is apparently in no rush to commit his peak years to the Red Devils, with reports the club are even looking at Everton and England stopper Jordan Pickford as a possible future replacement.

United sources insist it has not reached that critical stage just yet although officials will not leave it any longer to activate the extra year, with de Gea’s current deal due to expire next summer.

The Manchester giants wanted to avoid using the fail-safe option, knowing full well it sends out a clear message the player is seriously contemplating quitting the Theatre of Dreams.

United, though, are understood to feel the need to put the stand-off to bed before the festive run of fixtures, at least in the knowledge de Gea would still command a fee in excess of £70m next summer if they are forced into making a sale.

The likes of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are tipped to be possible bidders for the custodian, who joined United as a raw teenager from Atletico Madrid for £19m back in 2010 and is now considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world.
