Manchester United chiefs have reportedly renewed their interest in Tottenham central defender Toby Alderweireld. The Red Devils were recently linked with a £100million bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, with Jose Mourinho said to be a massive fan of the 27-year-old.
Old Trafford sources, however, have distanced themselves from the reports in Italy – even though the United boss allegedly told former England chief Fabio Capello at a coaches’ convention that he covets the powerful Senegal international.
United are keen to bolster the centre of their rearguard in January and are hearing Alderweireld is still dragging his heels over signing a new deal at Spurs.
The Manchester giants know they can sign the player for a knockdown £25m next summer due to a clause in the Belgian’s contract, but are now believed to be ready to pay a premium next month for a player they enquired about back in late July.
United’s need is pressing, with Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling all suffering with various injuries over recent weeks.
