South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen is excited to be playing in the Nedbank Golf Challenge after a solid debut season on the European Tour. The 28-year-old sits 126th in the world rankings after a campaign in which he manged four top-10s but missed seven cuts.
A share of fourth at the Irish Open was his highlight while the Bellville-born star was fifth in the Made in Denmark tournament. He will tee it up in Sun City on Thursday to make his debut in an event that he has dreamed of taking part in since he was a child.
“It’s a tournament I’ve always wanted to play as a kid and came here plenty of times with the family to watch,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be here.”
Van Rooyen claimed the 2017 South African PGA Championship on the Sunshine Tour but has yet to taste victory on one of the big tours.
However, he is happy to keep plugging away after establishing himself on the circuit. “My first year on the European Tour gave me a lot of golf learning experiences, a lot of great finishes,” he added. “So again, we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and we’re moving in a really good direction.”
