Stoffel Vandoorne is reportedly set to join a Mercedes-backed Formula E team after admitting Toro Rosso is “no longer an option”. RTBF claim the Belgian driver will compete in next year’s Formula E championship with the German HWA AG team led by Mercedes Formula One executive director Toto Wolff.
Vandoorne, who will leave McLaren at the end of this season, admits he has had “almost no luck” in his bid to stay in F1.
“At this moment, there is still nothing decided for next year, but in my head, I know exactly what I would like to do,” he said.
“I think we are getting closer to a decision – Formula E is a possibility, but we have also received a lot of offers from teams involved in other categories. It’s a good position and this allowed me to analyse all the options. I will now have to make the right decision! But in my head, everything is clear.
“Mercedes? It is you who says it!,” replied Vandoorne with a smile before emphasising the advantages of joining a large manufacturer involved in both Formula E and F1.
“I do not have to tell you their qualities, their results sum up everything! I have received a lot of offers from many teams, a lot of championships, and right now we’re looking a little on all sides what will be the best thing for my future.
“Toro Rosso, for me, it’s no longer an option, because right now I think it would take a miracle for something to happen there, even though I’ve been in contact with them.
“I think there is almost no luck at all, I hope to finish this season at McLaren on a positive note before starting a new challenge. In the future, I would like to get an opportunity in F1 under good circumstances, I think I deserve a place here.
“I know that in a good environment, I can always fight for wins and championships.”
