Vertonghen Expects New Spurs Deal

Jan Vertonghen is confident that he will be offered a new Tottenham deal as he continues in the final year of his current contract. The 31-year-old is in his seventh season with the north Londoners and penned a three-year deal in 2016, with his present terms set to expire in the summer of 2019.

Having proved that he is still a top-class defender with his displays for Belgium at the World Cup, Spurs fans will be keen for the experienced stopper to be handed an extension to anchor Mauricio Pochettino’s rearguard.

Should he remain without a fresh deal until the New Year, then the former Ajax man will be free to talk to other clubs and there will be no shortage of suitors.

However, speaking while on international duty, Vertonghen issued a positive update, according to HLN journalist Kristof Terreur.

“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year,” he reported the centre back as saying. “I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

Vertonghen has made 243 appearances for The Lilywhites after making his debut in 2012 and has bagged nine goals, five of those coming in the Premier League.
