Batsman James Vince has been recalled to the England side for the fourth Test against India to provide cover for Jonny Bairstow. The 27-year-old Hampshire man, who was dropped in April following the winter tour of New Zealand, has been handed another opportunity on the back of Bairstow suffering a broken finger in the 203-run defeat in the third Test at Trent Bridge.
There is still a chance that Bairstow will bat in the Test at Southampton, which starts in a week’s time on August 30, with Jos Buttler remaining as wicket-keeper.
But if he fails to make it, Vince, who is the second highest run-scorer in County Championship Division One this season and boasts an average of 24.90 in 13 Tests for England, will step in.
“James returns to the England set-up in confident form and scoring runs. He has been in excellent form for Hampshire,” said national selector Ed Smith.
England’s defeat to India in Nottingham means they go to Southampton leading the five-match Test series 2-1, with two still left to play.
