Ward-Prowse Urges Improved Mentality

James Ward-Prowse says Southampton must improve their mentality if they want to avoid another season of struggle. Saints only just about stayed up last season, finishing three points and one place above the bottom three, as Mark Hughes achieved his objective in the final weeks of the campaign.

Hughes’ side have begun with just one draw from their first two games this term – a 0-0 affair with Burnley on the opening weekend – and went down 2-1 at Everton on Saturday.
Ward-Prowse has been frustrated with their lack of focus in the first half of the two games so far and says they must get their mentality right if they are to see an improvement in results.

“It’s a mentality thing. I think we just need to adopt that same energy we had in both the second halves and push on,” he said in the Daily Echo.
“But we’re only two games in, there’s no need to worry about the team like that.
“Last year gave us a lot of belief towards the end, brought back that confidence. Obviously you transfer that into the start of the games and we’ll be back to our old ways.”
He added: “I think maybe it’s just a mentality thing. We’re well prepared, it’s just a case of making sure that we start games brighter and give ourselves a platform to kick on in the game.”
