Werder Set European Target

Werder Bremen chairman Marco Bode says the club’s target is to secure qualification for European football. Bremen finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season and haven’t competed in Europe since the 2010-11 campaign, when they were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages.

The German outfit handed sporting director Frank Baumann a two-year contract extension on Friday, and Bode says one of his goals is to help the club to secure a spot in Europe in the near future.

He told the club’s official website: “There has been a lot of talk about goals and ambitions in the past week. Of course, we all want Werder to get back into Europe – that’s certainly one of Frank’s goals, but we know it’ll be difficult and it’s not all down to him. He and [manager] Florian Kohfeldt together will be key for us reaching our targets, and we’re convinced that the two of them can do it.”

Bremen are seventh in the Bundesliga after two games having picked up four points so far.
