Former world number one Lee Westwood has confirmed he has split from long-time caddie Billy Foster after 10 years together. Three-time European Tour golfer of the year Westwood had been struggling for form over the past couple of seasons and he had slipped to 119th in the world following his tie for 35th at the Turkish Airlines Open.
After finishing in a share of fifth recently at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters with his son on the bag, the 45-year-old from Worksop had his girlfriend Helen Storey caddying for him in South Africa last week.
The change in personnel worked wonders as the Englishman won the Nedbank Golf Challenge for the third time to move onto 24 European Tour titles and climb to 64th in the world rankings.
Speaking about his split from Foster, Westwood said: “Billy is one of the best caddies out here, so he’ll pick up a new bag. He’s working for Matt (Fitzpatrick) this week and obviously Matt’s done well around here and he’ll have a chance.
Billy will improve him, there’s no doubt about that. “I’ve got a good relationship with Billy. Obviously we’re very good friends and I saw him earlier and we had a hug. But our working relationship had got to a point where neither of us were gaining anything from it and we weren’t doing each other any good. “I sat him down and said, ‘This is no good, I’m playing better when you’re not there than when you are there, so something’s obviously not working’.”
