Venus and Serena Williams are set to meet in the third round of the US Open, while Sloane Stephens has also gone through. Serena overcame 101st-ranked Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-2 6-2 in a little more than an hour and will now meet her sister, who had beaten Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-4 7-5 in an hour and 52 minutes earlier in the day.
Serena leads Venus 17-12 overall and 15-10 at majors and Friday’s meeting will be the earliest they have face each other in a grand slam tournament in 20 years.
“Obviously, it’s early in the tournament, so both of us are going to be looking forward to continuing to play better,” Venus said.
Meanwhile, defending champion Stephens fought back from a set down to beat world number 134 Anhelina Kalinina 4-6 7-5 6-2 in two hours and 46 minutes.
She faces Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka next and was just relieved to get through a tough match.
“I wasn’t playing my best,” the 25-year-old said. “It was super hot and that was no fun at all. I was sweating a lot. But I came out in the third set bouncing around.”
