Former England international Ian Wright believes Gareth Southgate should hand Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson the chance to impress. Wilson has made a fine start to 2018-19 and already boasts two goals from his first four outings as Bournemouth sit in a lofty sixth position with seven points.
Wilson has been key in helping them to get off the mark quickly and the striker looks to be enjoying his football after a tough few years with injuries.
He was tipped to force his way into the England set-up shortly after the Cherries came into the top flight but a series of serious knee injuries stalled his progress.
Wright, who won 33 caps for the Three Lions, believes Wilson has done enough to claim a place in Southgate’s squad and has urged the England manager to consider options away from the ‘big six’.
Speaking on 5 Live Sport, Wright said: “What Gareth has to look at now is not going ageist or ‘club-ist’ on people in respect of not being at an elite club.
“If someone is doing a good enough job and playing well enough in this league at the moment then pick them and play them – give them a chance.
“Callum Wilson with the injuries and what he’s done – these players have had a real hardship to get where they are and deserve to be rewarded.”
