Talks over a new 12-month deal for Ashley Young include the veteran accepting a significant wage reduction, insiders say. Young currently earns around £130,000-per-week, bracketing him above many of his younger team-mates in the Old Trafford pay scale.
Club insiders, however, have stated the present negotiations will see the 33-year-old’s basic salary being lowered below the £100k-per-week mark, but with the chance to earn further bonuses.
It has become United policy in recent seasons to review pay for players over the age of 30 and on rolling 12-month deals.
Young has been at United since arriving from Aston Villa for £17m back in 2011 and has previously turned down lucrative offers to wind down his career in China.
The England international is still considered a reliable squad option by Jose Mourinho, who has also given his blessing to him staying put.
Young has a decent relationship with the United boss and it is not a question of money for him at this stage, rather him trying to help the Red Devils climb back to the top of the English footballing summit.
