Young Seagulls Impress Management Duo

Chris Hughton and Paul Trollope Duo saw Brighton’s Under-23s clinch their first victory in the Premier League International Cup on Monday.

Simon Rusk’s side showed maturity and composure in defeating Benfica 2-0 at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

Former Brommapojkarna striker Viktor Gyokeres broke the deadlock from the penalty spot, before young Irishman Aaron Connolly struck his ninth goal of the season.

Brazilian defender Bernardo was named in the starting line-up, while Max Sanders returned in the middle of a five-man midfield.

Connolly had already tested the Portuguese side’s goalkeeper with a glancing header when Mathias Normann was fouled inside the box.

Gyokeres stepped up to convert from the penalty spot to give Albion the lead.

Defender Ben Barclay then blocked a fierce shot from Keaton Parks, before Hugo Keto dived to tip another effort around the post.

Connolly grabbed his almost customary goal when he latched onto Ben White’s searching pass, cut inside his marker and curled the ball into the bottom corner.

The Seagulls almost grabbed a third when Sanders swung a free kick towards goal from the corner of the penalty area, but his effort clipped the top of the crossbar.
