INTERVIEW – Rohr: Eagles Will Work Hard To Beat Libya In Sfax

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr reveals in this interview with Johnny Edward in Uyo how his team will approach the second leg fixture of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers against Libya in Sfax Tunisia on Tuesday. He also talks about the injury worries in his camp, and how delighted he is that Odion Ighalo proved his critics wrong in the big win against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
Excerpts…..

On Injury worries ahead of the reverse fixture against Libya in Tunisia.

Abdullahi Shehu suffered a muscle contraption in the quadriceps on his right leg during the game. It was not a groin injury. He’s going to be out of action for the second game. We also lost Ogenyi Onazi who has an inflammation on his achiles. He won’t be traveling g with us to Tunisia. We have 22 players for the second game in Tunisia.

On Francis Uzoho’s performance

Uzoho didn’t concede a goal which was important. He also had some problems with his foot. You will notice that some of his balls were going out of the pitch . The grass was not so good. He put up a good performance again for the team. He’s only 19, don’t forget. But he can progress much more.

On the big win against Libya

We won the game because we scored four goals. We worked hard for the win and scored more goals. It’s good for the team. We deserved the victory against a side that played well against South Africa. Everyone was impressed. The early goal gave us good confidence at the start of the game.

On Samuel Kalu’s performance

Kalu did very well but sometimes he had a problem of integrating well into the team which is normal coming into a new team. He is playing better and better. He did very well. Playing in Nigeria for the first time in an important match like this he did well. I saw him play for Bordeaux and he’s was very good

There’s little more work for him (Kalu) to do in replacing Victor Moses. The door is still open for him to come back . If he’s fit, why not. Victor loves his fatherland that I know.

On Odion Ighalo’s hat-trick

I am very happy for Odion Ighalo because he has been unfairly criticised in the social media. I’m really happy that he gave a good response on the pitch. We also have new in Ahmed Musa who is leading the team in another style from John Mikel Obi, but he is younger and fresh. I think the team is on the right path.

This team will be happy to receive the experienced players back. The likes of Elderson Echiejile, Victor Moses and Mikel. The average age was 24. We missed key players in Moses and Mikel Obi. We had two new players in the team, Samuel Kalu and Jamilu Collins who did well.

On the reverse fixture against Libya I Sfax

We will approach the game differently and ensure we record another win.

  • Thanks coach for your response but abeg let us assume it was a slip of the tongue that you mentioned Elderson Echiejile. He has retired. Please don’t call him back to disgrace his generation. Thanks

  • For players to sit up, they have to be criticised. And no player in the SE team is immune to criticism.

Not only Ighalo we criticized but you as well sir. We criticized both of you guys to sit tight. Thank your God you got your tactics right sir. All in all, we loved you but that doesn’t says we stopped talking when things are not going the way it’s supposed to go.

Do the right thing at the right time sir then, Nigerians will celebrate you and the team. Up Super Eagles.
I saw individuals displayed against Libya.

Eagles should be playing collectively as a team. This is the area I observed in today’s match that baba Rohr have to fixed before Tuesday. Everyone wanted to scored, not good for the team. When the time comes, they will definitely score goals. For sure, Super Eagles missed Captain Mikel and Victor Moses. I’m happy the team have done well. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Good GAM and nice result to the super eagles but I still don’t believe so much in in our coach genort rohr because of his tactics and stubborn head. Nigeria could have lost the game in the first half to a better team. Why will Roth ever start shehu abdulahi who is just coming from an injury? And leave a red hot aina who plays week in week out with Torino. Rorh wasted one of our sub which is a great minus in the game leaving us with just two sub with just 15 played. Well its just my candid opinion though bit rorh must also be watched closely for me, I doubt his techincal prowess.

Let us be fair in criticising the coach. Shehu Abdulahi came to Nigeria fit. He had recovered from injury last month, played a couple of games with his club and was voted Man of the match very recently in his club. So his getting injured is not the coach’s fault. A fully fit Shehu on his day is a delight to watch. If you doubt me go watch the world cup qualifiers.

Aina played very well and like every substitute, will try to make a case for being in the starting 11.

So let’s respect some of the coach decision, he not only watch their club matches, he also sees them in training.

  • I don’t think we need the services of Victor Moses any longer. He might want to wait till we qualify for the Nations cup or world cup before rescinding his decision. Rohr should stick to d current patriots or upcoming players who are dying to serve their fatherland anytime anyday.Victor Moses should concentrate on his family and club duties.

  • Great, all the boys lived up to expectation by trouncing Libya. However, team or collective play is most important rather than the individualistic style that featured prominently on the day. I want to see Aaron Moses play again. He was on the bench on the day.

  • Iwobi and Musa were the playmakers that enabled Ighalo to show…we also saw the new guys trying to play for themselves yesterday just impress us
