Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi was an unused substitute on Wednesday night as Arsenal brightened their chances of a top four Premier League place with a 2-0 win against Southampton at Saint Mary’s, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Iwobi’s last league game was the 2-2 draw against Manchester City on April 2.
Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud were the scorers for Arsenal who climbed to fifth place with 66 points, one point ahead of Manchester United.
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey had Arsenal’s first chance of the game when he took a first-time shot on goal in the 15th minute but his volley went narrowly wide of the right post.
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain pulled up with an injury in the 36th minute and was replaced by Hector Bellerin.
Arsenal broke the deadlock on the hour mark through Sanchez who finished off an individual effort with a superb strike from inside the box with Mesut Ozil the assist maker. Fraser Forster was unable to do anything as the ball flew low into the middle of the goal.
Southampton manager Claude Puel decided to introduce fresh legs, with Jay Rodriguez replacing Dusan Tadic in a desperate bid to equalise but it was Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud who had barely touched the ball after replacing Danny Welbeck that nodded home the ball with seven minutes left on the clock.
Granit Xhaka almost cost the Gunners a goal when he lost the ball as Moroccan forward Sofiane Boufal profited but his shot only hit the side net.
