Manchester City strengthened their chances of clinching the English Premier League title by defeating Arsenal 3-0 in Thursday’s rescheduled game at the Emirates.
Three first-half goals from Bernado Silva, David Silva and Leroy Sane extended Manchester City’s lead at the top to 16 points. The defeat was the ninth of the season for Arsene Wenger’s team in the EPL.
Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi was benched for the entire game.
Pep Guardiola’s side became the first team after Chelsea in 2005/06 season to beat Arsenal three times in the same season with the defeats occurring at different grounds.
The win was Manchester City’s 30th win this season in the EPL in Pep Guardiola’s 100th game in charge of the club.
Arsenal started the game lively, pushing City backward with their strings of passes and had two half chances to score but City settled in and took the initiative, scoring three goals in 18 minutes.
Bernado Silva gave Manchester City the lead after 15 minutes, curling in Sane’s lovely pass from the left flank.
David Silva doubled the lead for Manchester City, firing in from close range Sergio Aguero’s pass in the Arsenal box in the 28th minute.
Sane who had a hand in the opening two goals finished off a sweeping counter attack move tapping in Kyle Walker’s cross in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang missed a spot kick after Henrikh Mkhitaryan was brought down by Nicolas Otamendi in the box.
In the 72nd minute, Aguero was denied by Petr Cech when the former Chelsea goalkeeper stretched a strong right hand to deny the Argentine.
