Iwobi Bags Assist As Arsenal Hold Liverpool

By Johnny Edward:

Alex Iwobi made an assist when he came on as a second half substitute for Arsenal who played out a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool Emirates stadium on Saturday reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

James Milner’s struck a fierce shot from the edge of the box in the 61st minute after Bernd Leno error but late strike from Alexander Lacazette secured a point for the Gunners. The point takes Liverpool top of the table with Manchester City playing on Sunday.

Both sides had chances to score in the exciting first half with Liverpool hitting the wood work three times.
The Reds also looked shaky at the back, with the trio of Pierre Emerick Aubamenyang, Henrikh Mkhitariyan and Alexander Lacazette coming close to breaking the deadlock.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then had an effort deflected into the side netting via the boot of Joe Gomez before Mkhitaryan beat Alisson to a cross, but headed inches wide with 15 minutes gone.

Liverpool went closer still to breaking the deadlock soon after when Firmino prodded Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pass over Leno and against the post. Mane tapped in the rebound, but the goal was ruled offside.

Virgil Van Dijk also came close to breaking the deadlock but his goal bound strike was thwarted by Leno’s point-blank save.

Van Dijk also beat Leno to a Milner free-kick, but his glancing header bounced agonisingly against the base of the post as the opening 45 minutes ended without a goal.

In the second half, Arsenal were looking the more likely to make the breakthrough, but it was Liverpool who took the lead on 61 minutes. Mane sped into space down the left and delivered a powerfully-hit centre, which Leno attempted to punch to safety.

However, it fell for Milner just inside the area, who returned it first time into the back of the net with a driven strike.

The Gunners threatened an instant riposte, though Alisson managed to push Lucas Torreira’s strike over the crossbar.

Firmino then headed narrowly wide from a corner and Van Dijk’s thump goalwards with his forehead was tipped over by Leno as Liverpool looked for a second.

But Arsenal levelled with eight minutes remaining when Lacazette reached a pass from Iwobi into the area in the right channel of the box and with Alisson drawn from his line, swivelled and clipped an effort into the far corner.

Arsenal host Sporting CP in midweek in the Europa League before looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League next weekend against Wolves.
Liverpool travel to Belgrade to face Red Star on Tuesday, before hosting Fulham.

Iwobi our New Nigerian Messi. He came in and made difference. At first, he dribbled past 3 players at the edge of Liverpool’s 18 and gave a perfect cross though Lacazette couldn’t reach the cross well and later on layed a defence scattering pass that left Gomez and Van Dijk in awe as Lacazette raced onto it and scored. Tell me how Ighalo when he’s gat Iwobi behind him. The guy has really improved

I have no idea how Emery didn’t start Iwobi ahead of Mhikitaryan. That I think cost Arsenal the win today. Iwobi his fast becoming a player that makes a difference any time he’s on the field. All he needs in a game is like 2 or 3 decisive passes and at least two of them will lead to goals. He can also chip in with goals as well. Such a marvelous talent to take over the creative mantle of the SuperEagles.

  • Mhikitaran in that match was good even Aubemeyang that was substituted was fantastic too. Everyone played their part without exception to iwobi too

  • Iwobi indeed is our new JAY JAY OKOCHA we have miz for a long time.
