Jose: Lampard Free To Join Man City

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is on his way to Manchester City – and Blues boss Jose Mourinho has had his say on the subject.

Despite the confusion and ensuing controversy over Lampard joining one of Chelsea’s rival, Blues boss Mourinho says that the experienced midfielder is free to sign for whoever he wants – and will always be welcomed back to West London when the two teams meet.

“He is a free agent, he can choose his club so there’s no problem at all,” said Mourinho. “When he comes to Stamford Bridge he is welcome.”

Lampard, now 36, has had a long-running association with Chelsea since signing for the club from West Ham in 2001, and went on to make a mockery of the £11m fee paid by the Blues.

With just shy of 650 appearances for the club and 211 goals, Lampard became the club’s all-time record goalscorer in 2013, forever writing himself in Chelsea folklore.

Yet after a 13 year spell at Stamford Bridge, Lampard’s time at the club came to and end this summer after Chelsea took the decision to not extend the England international’s contract. A big money move to Australia was mooted, but Lampard confirmed his next destination last month – New York City FC.
