Kanu: 2014 Bad For Nigerian Football

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

Former Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu has described 2014 as a terrible year for Nigerian football even as he believes 2015 will be better.

Kanu who spoke while retrospecting Nigerian sports in 2014 said the inability of the Super Eagles to qualify for the African Cup of Nations sums up the extent of the failure that was the bane of football in Nigeria.

“It is quite clear and we don’t need to shy away from the fact that Nigerian football did not fare well in the outgoing year (2014). It was a torrid year for our game.

“This is as a result of the Super Eagles failure to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations holding in January 2015 in Equatorial Guinea. So if we are not featuring among the best countries in Africa that would participate in the 2015 AFCON, it simply means that something is wrong with our football this year.’

He continued: “Honestly we didn’t do well in the game this year; it’s just the honest truth. There is nothing good to write about as regards the senior national team of Nigeria. Mind you FIFA rates our performance based on the Super Eagles performance not the age grades or Nigeria’s women national teams’ performances.

“It has been a disappointing year for Nigerian football. But by God’s grace 2015 would be a new beginning for u. I sincerely pray that everybody involved in all the crisis and problems that troubled Nigerian football in the year 2014 will sit back and look at themselves and have a rethink, have a change of mind and start working in earnest for the uplifting of the game in the country,”he stated.

The former Arsenal of England star says the ideal thing to do is to use 2015 to rebuild the Super Eagles since they will not be involved In so many competitions.
