Kanu, Dr Khumalo: African Legends Game In Lagos Is Message Against Xenophobia

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, and former South Africa international, Doctor Khumalo, have expressed their support for the forthcoming African Football Legends match billed to hold on April 29 in Lagos, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Former African stars from South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, and other African nations have signed up for the game which the Lagos State government has accepted to host. The match will be used to preach peace and kick against xenophobic attack.

African business owners residing in South Africa, mostly Nigerians, were recently victims of inhumane attacks by locals who reportedly felt threatened by the growing businesses of foreigners in their country.

The proceeds from the match will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation.

A dedicated Twitter handle for the epoch game in Lagos, @TheAFFLegends, quotes the former Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal star's endorsement of the movement.

"It doesn't matter where you come from, language, color or religion. We are one Africa and we will get all Africans involved in this game," the African Football Legend Twitter handle quotes Kanu, the 1996 and 1999 African Footballer of the Year as saying.

South African football legend, Khumalo, a 1996 African Nations Cup winner also endorses the movement.

"We will use this game to tell Nigerians that we the People of South Africa and our governments are not in Support of Xenophobia," Khumalo states.

Nigeria's vice president, Yomi Osinbajo; Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode; Nigeria's Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung and his South African counterpart, Mbalula Fikile; Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick and his board; top football technocrats and captains of industries will be in attendance, the Twitter handle informs.
