Keshi: Eagles Deal Almost Done!

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has revealed that he is close to signing a contract extension with the Nigerian Football Federation but will only complete the deal if his assistant coach Houandinou Valere is handed a contract as well.

The former Togo coach told Complete Sports that though the NFF are yet to agree on Valere’s contract an agreement could be reached in the coming days.

“They have not reverted regarding to our “counter offer” and the deal for Valere must also be agreed upon before I rejoin the national team,” Keshi told Complete Sports in an exclusive interview on Sunday.

“There’s nowhere in the world where a coach pays his assistant’s salaries but that’s what I’ve been doing. I will be back in Nigeria next month after my holidays but that could be cut short if a favorable response is received from the Federation this week.”

He however added that the financial terms of his contract is the least of the issues of his extension.

“A good working condition and respect is what befits us not just money,” he added.

The former Eagles skipper’s contract lapsed at the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but he was not offered an extension as a crisis engulfed the NFF immediately after Nigeria’s ouster from the World Cup.

Meanwhile, a top source of the NFF has revealed to Complete Sports that Keshi remains the only candidate for the Eagles post.

“The committee got it wrong offering him N5m monthly in the first place,” the source who pleaded anonymity told Complete Sports.

“He won the Nations Cup and equalled our best ever finish at the World Cup in Brazil and you expect him to stay on the same salary. He remains our only choice and I’m hopeful the Federation will meet his demands but he also must be considerate as well.”
