Kolarov Fires Serbia Past Costa Rica With Spectacular Free-Kick

Serbia got their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign in Russia off to a winning start by defeating Costa Rica 1-0 at the Samara Stadium on Sunday.

Captain Aleksandar Kolarov was the match winner for the Serbia team.

The AS Roma left-back curled in a brilliant free-kick in the 56th minute past Keylor Navas from 25 yards to hand his side maximum points from their opening game.

Kolarov’s goal was the third scored from a direct free-kick at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Serbia with their array of stars posted a dominant display in the encounter and were unlucky not to have taken the lead on three occasions in the first half.

Sergej Milinkovic’Savic came close with an overhead kick in the 43rd minute which Navas saved just after Aleksandar
Mitrovic and Dusan Tadic also came close.

Real Madrid keeper Navas again made an outstanding save in the 50th minute to keep out Mitrovic after the striker was played through on goal by Milinkovic-Savic.

Kolarov’s goal from a free-kick broke the deadlock in the 56th minute.

Costa Rica manager Oscar Ramirez brought on Arsenal forward Joel Campbell, Daniel Solera and Christian Bolanos after they conceded but the Serbia held on for a crucial win.

Serbia will face Switzerland in their next game while Costa Rica will battle Brazil on the 22nd of June.
