Lagos Vows To Host World-Class Beach Soccer AFCON

Lagos State has reiterated its readiness to host a top-notch Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The competition is scheduled for 13 December to 18 December at Eko Atlantic City.

Lagos State Information Commissioner, Steve Ayorinde, said at a press conference on Friday that the state is committed to hosting an event to remember. 

"Lagos is known for excellence in sports and entertainment and we're projecting these traits at the Beach Soccer AFCON," Ayorinde said.

"We'll use the hosting of this huge event to sell our mega city dream. We're the centre of excellence and the most populous city in Nigeria.

"Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's vision is to use arts and culture, entertainment and sports to drive the megacity, and this event will enhance this vision."

Ayorinde, a former Editor of Nigerian daily The Punch, asserted that Lagos takes sports very seriously and has proven in the past that it could host major sporting events.

"The Governor is very enthusiastic about sports and this has been demonstrated with the Lagos City Marathon, a top sporting event that we will host again soon.

"The building of five new stadia is also part of the 2017 Lagos State budget. The Governor believes in social infrastructure,  including sports."

The state has named a Lagos City Hosting Committee for the event, which includes top men and women from sports, arts and culture, security and entertainment. 

The co-chairman of the committee and Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, promised properly run event.

"We're going to have five, six days of fantastic football and fan engagement," he said.

"We'll use the Beach Soccer AFCON to showcase Lagos and showcase Nigeria."
