Last Respect For Late Onyeanwuna At aAl Glo League Centers

A minute silence will be observed in honour and memory of one of Nigeria’s football players, Albert Onyeanwuna who will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 19.

Onyeanwuna, one of the indigenous icons of the Nascent Association Football League in the country, played for the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Red Devils of Port Harcourt in the 1950’s through to the 1960’s.

The League Management Company (LMC) said it has issued the directive to all Match Commissioners to ensure that tribute be paid to Onyeanwuna, nicknamed, Master Dribbler and who was a member of national team in Nigeria’s debut appearance at the Africa Nations Cup in 1963.

“It is befitting that today’s players pay their last respect to this great football player who will be buried this coming weekend and this will be done before kick-off with a minute’s silence at all match venues”, Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of LMC said on Monday.

Onyeanwuna made his first appearance for the National Team, then known as the Red Devils in 1955 when he featured in an Olympic qualifying match against Morocco.

He went on to score for Nigeria at the 1963 Nations Cup which was the country’s entry into the competition. The late former international will be laid to rest in his native Abatete in Anambra State on Friday, 19th September.

Abubakar emphasized that “the LMC will continue to honour heroes of the past and the present to inspire active and aspiring football players to give their best for self, club, the league and the country at all times knowing that their labour will not be in vain”.
