Julen Lopetegui thanks Real Madrid board and paid tribute to the fans after being relieved of his duties.
The inevitable happened late on Monday night when the 52-year-old was officially dismissed following a disastrous start to the season, culminating in a 5-1 El Clasico defeat against Barcelona.
Lopetegui had expressed a desire to try and turn things around, but rather than take aim at the Real board, he thanked them for handing him the opportunity in the first place.

“After the decision taken by the Real Madrid board of directors, I want to thank the club for the opportunity they gave me,” he said in a brief statement provided to EFE.
“Thank you to the players for their effort and their work, as well as to each and every one of the club’s employees, for their good treatment during this time.
“And, of course my gratitude to the fans for their backing. I send them my best wishes for the rest of the season.”
Castilla coach Santiago Solari has been placed in temporary charge but Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte are also in the frame.
