Former Super Eagles striker Ayodele Makinwa has applauded Gernot for naming Simeone Nwankwo in his provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Nwankwo is one of the two new players named in the 30-man provisional squad by Rohr and former Lazio star Makinwa says the German coach made the right choice in picking the Crotone striker.
The other players listed in the squad for the first time is Nigeria Professional Football League top scorer Junior Lokosa.
Nwankwo has scored seven goals in Italian Serie A for Crotone this season as they need a win in their final league game against Napoli to avoid relegation.
“Rohr made a great choice selecting Simy because he is all you need in a striker for a team,” Makinwa, who was in the Super Eagles squad that won bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006, told CSN.
“Simy is an all-round striker. He is good at team play and when you need to go with the long thrust he is equally good.
“He’s a different kind of striker to Odion Ighalo who is the team’s first choice and thats the more reason why he should probably be in the squad as a back-up but that’s left to Rohr to decide. He is highly rated here in Italy.”
Crotone currently occupy the 18th position in the Italian Serie A table with 35 points from 37 games with one game left to play.
