Mane Hits Brace As Liverpool Outsmart Tottenham

Two first half goals from Sadio Mane helped Liverpool defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to earn the Reds their first win in the English Premier League in 2017.

The defeat was Spurs' first in their last ten games.

Jurgen Klopp's side moved up to fourth in the EPL log with 49 points from 25 games while Spurs now will trail Chelsea by 12 points if the Blues defeat Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Tottenham failed to get off the blocks at the start of the game and they were punished by the rampaging Reds who were out to end their miserable run in 2017.

Mane finished off a sweet effort in the 16th minute after Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino had both been denied by Hugo Lloris.

Two minutes later Giorginio Wijnaldum played a nice reverse pass for Mane who had Lloris alone to beat.

The Senegalese international calmly slotted the ball past the French goalkeeper for his second goal of the game.

Spurs tried to get back into the game and they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box after James Milner brought down Son Heung-min.

Christian Eriksen stepped up but curled his effort over the upright.

At the restart, Harry Kane who was largely anonymous in the first half hit the post after getting on the end of a Christian Eriksen free-kick in the 57th minute.

Spurs grew into the game and Mauricio Pochettino introduced Moussa Sissoko for Mousa Dembele. He also hurled off Son Heung-min and brought on Vincent Janssen.

While Liverpool determined to hold on to their lead replaced Philippe Coutinho with Emre Can with ten minutes left to play.
