Brazil defender, Marcelo, says that he was surprised to be substituted in Real Madrid’s 4-1 away win against Girona in their Spanish La Liga clash on Sunday.
Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui replaced the 30-year-old on the hour mark with centre-back Rapheal Varane.
“I was surprised by the substitution, but I respect the decision of the coach. I wanted to continue because I felt 100 per cent,” Marcelo told reporters after the game.
“We are on the right road and I am sure we are going to improve with each game. We played well today and we got the three points.”
Champions League holders Madrid came from behind to make it back-to-back wins to start the La Liga season.
Borja Garcia gave Girona a surprise 16th-minute lead before Madrid captain Sergio Ramos equalised from the penalty spot 23 minutes later.
A Karim Benzema brace and Gareth Bale’s goal completed Madrid’s comeback win away from home.
