–Super Eagles Striker Obafemi Martins Sets US Open Alight
Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins scored a goal on Thursday for Seattle Sounders as they whipped Chicago Fire 6-0 in the semifinal of the US Open Cup.
The Nigerian international helped Sounders thrash Fire six-nil at the Starfire Sports Complex Stadium.
It was a good run out for Martins in the cup this season, with German coach Siegfried Schmid preferring to rest the former Inter Milan talisman for league matches.
The ex-Wolfsburg man wasn’t the only Nigerian-born player that turned out for Sounders, with central defender Jalil Anibaba lasting the entire duration of the match.
Chad Barrett opened the goal-rush for the Major League Soccer (MLS) title chasing side.
A brace each from Andy Rose and Kenny Cooper was another highlight of the match.
Martins, 30, was a 74th minute substitute and five minutes after his introduction he struck the game’s fifth goal.
