Martins: Shanghai Shenhua Victory More Important Than My Hat-trick

By David Meshioye:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Shanghai Shenshua striker Obafemi Martins has played down the importance of his sterling performance against Hebei CFFC,  saying picking three points was much more important than his first hat-trick this season, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Nigerian scored thrice as Shenshua defeated Hebei CFFC 4-2 in their Chinese Super League game on Saturday.

“I’m so happy to get the goal. I missed some chances, but I had to fight with my teammates and ended up scoring three goals.

“I feel great to have scored a hat-trick. I am happy for the team because winning the game is much more important. We did great today and I’m glad that we won,” Martins told sina.com.cn

The 33-year-old opened the scoring for Shanghai Shenshua in the 62nd minute after Hebei took the lead through Chengdong Zhang in the 48th minute.

Martins again ensured Shenshua rallied back with his second goal of the game in the 76th minute, after Ezequiel Lavezzi scored for Hebei.

Colombian attacking midfielder, Freddy Guarin put Shenshua ahead for the first time when he scored in the 82nd minute to give the home side a 3-2 lead. But Martins finally put the game to bed when he scored his third of the game in the 90th minute to complete his hat-trick.

Just watch the highlights of Obagoal”s recent hattrick in China.
He is still a top finisher.
Hope all the errors noted during the friendlies are duly corrected by GR.

I’ve watched his goals right from when he was in Seattle Sounders in the MLS were he scored 40 goals from 2013-2015 before moving to China. He is a fast diminutive and agile left-footed striker that will give us depth in the attack and will also cause problem to every opposing teams defense and create openings for other strikers. Obagoal the weapon of mass destruction still has the destructive missiles on both feet and he is primarily known for his outstanding pace, mobility and athleticism as a footballer as well as his striking power and his strength, inspite of his small stature.
I remembered vividly on 14 January,2007, when he scored in a 2-3 away win against Tottenham Hotspur. Obagoals 20-yard shot rocketed into the net. The strike was clocked by Sky Sports at a speed of 84mph ( 135 Km/h ),making it unofficially the ninth hardest shot ever recorded in football according to some newspapers sports headlines.
Germany Klose went to the last world cup in Brazil as his last world cup and he made the difference helping Germany win the world cup that year. Lets take Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins (34) to his last ever world cup to make the difference.

We need to consider many factors as regards martins. We should remember that we took Ameobi 33 years then to the last world cup, What did he do?, though I want a prolific goal scorer like him at world cup, but we need to watch and see how consistent he will be.

Obafemi Martins is a must for the Super Eagles! Nigeria is lucky to be spoilt for choice when it comes to attackers. Ighalo needs rivalry.

  • Obagoal has proven that he is still the dynamite that can’t be caged. Let’s set him at our opponents to create potent sparks. SE fans have cheered this team enthusiastically throughout the qualifiers. All steps should be taken to avert a disappointing WC show. GR, we are not taking over your job; it doesn’t need a licensed coach to know that Martins is one of the missing links needed to energize the SE. Act NOW!

  • I STRONGLY SUPPORT THAT GR.SHOULD GIVE THE WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION A LOOK-IN THIS TIME AROUND,WE NEED HIS EXPERIENCE IN THE TEAM, HE JUST NEEDED TO BE RECEIVED WITH AN OPEN HEART. GOING TO WORLD CUP WITH THE YOUNGEST TEAM IS NOT AN ACHIEVEMENT BUT A SIGN OF UNSERIOUSNESS TO WIN THE CUP OR TO GO FAR.

A lot of new names (Dressers, Adi, Sadiq, Martins etc) have been flagged of recent for a possible new addition into the current SE. They are good players. But I am sure the coach knows these guys. The coach would have also watched their matches or clips. The coach has reports from his scouts on these guys. Therefore there must be a reason while he hasn’t considered them up till now. Because the coach should be more interested in any new value addition than you and I.

The second question is, considering the fact that we just have one more friendly match in May 25th against DR Congo and immediately after which the final world cup squad list must have been submitted to FIFA. since they are not in the class of Ronaldo or Messi…do they have the exceptional class and time to break into the current SE considering the need for team cohesion, chemistry and imbibing the psychology of the coaches playing pattern.

Again we need to know the mind of the Rohr’s technical crew amidst all these quest for new additions.
