New signing Nemanja Matic made his debut for Manchester United on Wednesday night as they defeated Sampdoria 2-1 in a pre-season friendly in Dublin, Ireland.
Matic, who joined United on Monday from Chelsea reportedly for an initial £35 million fee with £5m in add-ons, had a decent game controlling the midfield but it was Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata who scored United’s goals while Dennis Praet scored for Sampdoria.
Armenian forward Mkhitaryan gave the Premier League side an early lead with a close-range header after a cross from Matteo Darmian in the ninth minute.
United pressed on for more goals in the first half, with Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Pereira and Mhkitaryan coming close.
Matic was taken off at the start of the second half for Michael Carrick as United manager Jose Mourinho made a raft of changes, with Mata, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini also coming on.
Sampdoria also made several changes early in the second half and equalised in the 63rd minute with Praet’s right-footed shot from outside the United box.
Both sides continued to create chances but it was United who got the winner through Mata in the 81st minute with a left-footed shot from close range from an Anthony Martial assist.
The Sampdoria match was Manchester United’s seventh this pre-season, the Red Devils winning six and losing one to Barcelona.
The Red Devils, who won last season’s UEFA Europa League, face Champions League winners Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia on Tuesday.
